Buerger’s Disease – Treatment, Prevention and Natural Remedies for Buerger’s Disease

Buerger’s disease is a very rare disorder of the arteries and veins in the arms and legs. The blood vessels swell and can become blocked with blood clots which slowly destroy and damage the skin tissues. This may lead to gangrene and infection and the symptoms first appear in the hands and feet which can expand to affect larger areas of the arms and legs. The main treatment is to quit all forms of tobacco and the end stage treatment is amputation of a part of the limb.

There is no treatment that has been discovered so far to treat this disease. Only the symptoms of this disease can be treated which includes:

Surgical Intervention
The different surgical procedures include:

  • Vascular Surgery: This procedure is found to be of great help in treating the limbs that have poor perfusion. Minimal invasive catheter procedures are performed to maintain the vascularity of the blood vessels that are blocked.
  • Surgical sympathectomy: In this surgery, the nerves in the affected area are removed depending on the severity of pain in the limbs. This procedure is mainly done to control pain.
  • Amputation: In this procedure, the dead tissues in the arms and legs are removed surgically under aseptic conditions.This is done if there is a severe infection or gangrene is formed.

The different types of medications used include:

  • Medications may be given to improve the blood flow.
  • To dissolve blood clots in the blood, the doctor may prescribe anti-coagulants.
  • The use of stem cell injections has been a successful in treating patients with Buerger’s disorder.
  • Pain killers may be administered to reduce the pain.
  • In some cases, hospitalization may be required to treat a patient more efficiently.
  • Antibiotics may be administered to treat the infections.
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be given to increase the oxygen levels.
  • This type of oxygen therapy is given in cases where there is gangrene formation.

Prevention of Buerger’s disease
Buerger’s disease can be prevented by the following:

  • Quit smoking.
  • Stop using tobacco.
  • Stop the use of nicotine and other products.
  • Talk to your doctor about the various strategies to help you quit smoking.
  • Residential smoking-cessation program can be adopted.
  • When you find the early symptoms, talk to your doctor for early treatment as this avoids further complications.
  • Participate in counseling sessions to deal with the cravings for cigarettes.
  • Take care of cuts or bruises on the skin.
  • If you are diabetic, observe your hands and feet for any sores, cuts or infections.
  • Exercise regularly and keep yourself active.
  • Eat a balanced diet as this helps you to be healthy.

Herbal Remedies for end-stage (Gangrene)
The natural remedies include:

  • Ginkgo: The extracts of ginkgo are taken and 25 drops are consumed daily.
  • Echinacea: Take 20 drops of echinacea extracts three times daily.
  • Horsetail: 15-20 drops of this juice along with tincture is applied as a moist compress or added to bath water.
  • Turmeric and Black cumin oil: This mixture is applied over those areas of the arms and legs where there is gangrene formation.
  • Keep the part where gangrene is formed, open to sunlight.
  • Keep the gangrene part dry and clean.
