Primary Headaches with Intermediate Duration

  • Other (temporomandibular (TMJ) disorder, sinusitis, trigeminal neuralgia)

Intermediate Duration
Primary headaches with intermediate duration would be considered when occur longer than 4 hours.
The types of primary headaches with intermediate duration are as follows:

  • Transformed migraine
  • New daily persistent headache
  • Chronic tension-type headache
  • Hemicrania continua

Transformed Migraine
Most patients who suffer with transformed migraine have a history of episodic migraine since the age of 15 to 25 years old. As time goes by (months to years), pain from headaches becomes more frequent , severe and intense whilst associated migraine signs, i.e., sensitivity to light, nausea are diminish.

Migraine triggers, such as sleep disturbances and menstruation persist.

Attacks by severe migraine might be superimposed on a background from chronic daily tension-type headaches. Around 80 percent of transformed migraine patients overuse analgesics.
