In relation with the first paragraph and continuing the last article about chronic daily headache, we will explain categorization of primary headaches. The categorization of primary headaches can be divided due to the duration.

Short Duration
These primary headaches finish less than four hours. The types of primary headaches that occur in short period are as follows:

  • Cluster headache
  • Chronic paroxysmal hemicrania
  • Hypnic headache
  • Idiopatic Stabbing Headache

Cluster Headache
Cluster headache is the most common type of short-duration headache. This type of headache have to be considered in female patients who have the following distinctive presentation:

  • Average year of onset, starting from 27 to 31 years old
  • Pain is unilateral, severe and supraorbital. It lasts around 15 to 180 minutes
  • Associated signs include tearing, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, miosis, ptosis, facial sweating, eyelid swelling and conjunctival injection
  • One to eight accidents daily
  • Episodic or chronic

Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania
This type of headache occurs mostly among females. The pain from chronic paroxysmal hemicranias usually:

  • Intense
  • Sharp
  • Unilateral
  • Occurs 20 to 30 times per day

Similar with other forms of Chronic Daily Headache, the common consequence is overuse of medication.

Hypnic Headache
Hypnic headache happens primarily among elderly female patients who are awakened from their sleep by intense and severe pain alike to a cluster headache. Nonetheless, different with cluster headaches, nausea and vomiting are frequently associated with hypnic headaches.

Idiopatic Stabbing Headache
Idiopathic stabbing headaches are more common in female patients than those of males. The signs of idiopathic stabbing headache are as follows:

  • Severe pain
  • Stabbing pain which lasts from several seconds
  • Might occurs many times daily
  • Autonomic features are absent
  • Might be located on any part of the sufferer’s head

Idiopathic stabbing headaches respond to indomethacin treatment. Compared to trigeminal neuralgia, the pain from idiopathic stabbing headache is less intense. In term of duration, idiopathic stabbing headache is shorter than that of cluster headache.
