Body odor is any kind of unpleasant smell associated with an individual’s body. Perspiration is the part of cooling system of body and the smell results due to the presence of bacteria that get accumulated in the skin. The most common body parts that are associated with body odor include hair, groin, skin, armpits, belly button and ears. Though sweating is the most common cause for body odor, there are many other reasons like smoking and diseases like kidney and liver problems. - Antiperspirant: These contain aluminium based compounds that block the sweat pore temporarily and reduces the amount of perspiration that reaches the skin.
- Deodorant: Deodorants can remove odor but not excessive sweating as they are alcohol based and these turn the skin acidic, as this makes it less attractive to bacteria. Deodorants contain perfumed fragrances that mask the odor of perspiration and are used on the feet, hands and underarms.
- Aluminium Chloride: A doctor may prescribe over-the-counter antiperspirants that help to control sweating. Apply antiperspirants at night to those areas that are more prone to sweating. To prevent irritation, wash the medication off in the morning.
- Botulinum toxin: This can be used for excessive sweating. Botox is licensed as a treatment for excessive sweating in the armpits. A small amount of botox is injected into the skin at the armpit.
- Surgical intervention: In those cases, where the sweating is very severe and cannot be controlled by drugs, then one way is to remove the sweat glands from the affected area.
Prevention of bad body odor
Here are some tips to prevent body odor. They include:
- Take bath daily because this reduces the number of bacteria present in the skin.
- Dry your feet throughly after you bathe, as microorganisms grow more in the damp surface.
- Wear shoes and socks made of natural materials like leather.
- Try not to wear the same pair two days in a row.
- Change socks once or twice a day.
- Slip out of your shoes now and then to air your feet.
- Choose natural fiber clothing which allows your skin to breathe.
- Apply antiperspirants at bedtime to palms or soles of feet.
- Try relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation, as they teach you to control the stress that triggers perspiration.
- Change your diet and avoid caffeinated drinks and foods with strong odors like onions and garlic.
- The best way to prevent body odor is to drink a glass of water on an empty stomach along with 500mg wheat grass in the morning.
Home Remedies for Body odor
Body odor can be very embarrassing, try these natural ways to get rid of it. They include:
- Baking soda with lemon juice: Mix baking soda and lemon juice and rub this mixture on underarms.
- Tea tree: This is an antibacterial herb which reduces the bacterial growth.
- White vinegar: Take a cotton ball and put some white vinegar and apply to the underarms and you can be smell free the whole day.
- Turnip juice: Grate turnip, squeeze the grated turnip and apply the juice to the armpits.
- Sage tea: Drink sage tea daily as this will reduce the activity of sweat glands and minimize the body odor.
- Tomato juice: A mixture of fresh sage leaves and tomato juice can be applied on the area for 10 minutes before bathing.
- Rosemary: This is an antibacterial herb that helps to kill the bacteria that causes an offensive odor. Put 8-10 drops of the essential oil in 1 ounce of water and apply this mixture where you sweat a lot.
- Baby powder: Use baby powder or talc in those areas of heavy perspiration.
- Apple cider vinegar: This eliminates underarm body odor when used instead of deodorant as bacteria cannot live in areas with low pH.
