Gorlin Syndrome – Treatment and Prevention of Gorlin Syndrome

Gorlin syndrome is an inherited condition, also known as Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome. It causes a variety of problems that involves skin and connective tissues. The other features of this syndrome are harmless abnormalities in the bone, jaw cysts and multiple basal cell carcinomas. Gorlin syndrome is caused as a result of mutation in a gene present on chromosome 9. It is a autosomal dominant condition. The treatment and prevention of gorlin syndrome are discussed below.

Gorlin Syndrome Treatment
Although there’s no cure to gorlin syndrome, the carcinomas can be treated to some extent with the help of surgeries and therapies. These methods help in reducing the scarring processes. Depending on what part of the body is affected, doctors suggest the treatment. The treatment techniques of gorlin syndrome include the following.

  • Surgical treatment to remove the carcinomas
  • Simple excision
  • Photodynamic therapy or laser treatment
  • Mohs micrographic surgery
  • Cryotherapy
  • Frequent examination of family members to detect the faulty genes
  • Radiation treatment is a rarer technique as this involves severe risks and may also provoke the tumour development
  • Oral surgery that involves cyst enucleation followed by peripheral ostectomy
  • Electrodesiccation and curettage (ED&C)

Affected person needs to consult a dermatologist for regular skin examinations so that basal cell carcinomas are detected and treated when they are small itself. Doctor may prescribe medications that include creams for application and oral retinoids.

How to prevent the risks related of Gorlin Syndrome
Gorlin syndrome is a genetic disorder and hence cannot be prevented. But the risks that lead to gorlin syndrome can be reduced to some extent.

  • People with gorlin syndrome are very sensitive to radiations and the exposure leads to skin cancers. Hence, avoid exposure to ionizing radiations such as X-rays.
  • Avoid exposure to sun and use sunscreen lotions, this helps to prevent basal cell skin cancers.
  • Couples with a family history of gorlin’s syndrome should seek genetic counselling before having a child.
