Glandular Fever – Treatment, Prevention and Natural Remedies for Glandular Fever

Glandular fever is also called as mononucleosis or kissing disease. It is a type of viral infection characterized by high fever, sore throat, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, headache, muscle pain, etc. The virus responsible is Epstein-Barr virus, a strain of herpes group of viruses. The virus is mostly transmitted from one person to another through saliva. Glandular fever commonly affects young people of ages 10 to 25. The treatment, prevention and natural remedies for glandular fever are discussed below.

Glandular Treatment
As such there is no particular treatment recommended for glandular fever since it is a result of viral infection. Moreover the fever recovers totally in a couple of weeks. The treatment is only suggested for the symptoms that arise during the infection as they pose a serious trouble. The treatments for glandular fever include:

  • Steroids – Steroids are recommended by the doctor to help the affected person from reducing throat inflammations. These are rarely suggested.
  • Analgesics – Medications such as analgesics are prescribed to reduce the fever, headache and pain.
  • Antibiotics – Antibiotics does not kill the virus responsible for glandular fever. It treats and kills the secondary infections developed on the infected throat.
  • Fluids – Swallowing may be very painful as the person develops sore throat. Drinking plenty of water and unsweetened fruit juices help to relieve the sore throat and fever thus preventing dehydration. Symptoms of tiredness and headache are also relieved.
  • Rest – Taking plenty of rest for the first few weeks help to speed up the recovery time.

Glandular Fever Prevention
Preventing glandular fever means to prevent the spread of Epstein-Barr virus. Here are some of the tips that help to prevent the spread of virus that leads to glandular fever:

  • Wash hands regularly, particularly after sneezing or coughing
  • Avoid kissing
  • Avoid sharing personal items
  • Avoid eating and drinking shared foods

At present, there is no vaccine against glandular fever. People who are infected with Epstein-Barr virus become long-term carriers. Hence it is hard to prevent the infection if once infected.

Natural Remedies for Glandular Fever
Here are few of the remedies for glandular fever:

  • Epsom salt bath – Epsom salt is rich in magnesium and taking bath in water mixed with epsom salt is a good remedy. Magnesium helps in relaxing the muscles and thus treating muscle aches.
  • Drink plenty of water – Water controls dehydration and treats fatigue. It removes the toxins from the body and cleans the body system. Drinking 4 liters of water every day is very effective in controlling glandular fever.
  • Coriander – Coriander has anti-inflammatory property that helps in treating glandular fever. Crush coriander seeds and add to the boiling water. Leave it for 20 minutes and drink it.
  • Hot lemon tea with ginger – Ginger has anti-inflammatory property and lemon possess vitamin C that helps in relieving sore throat and hence treating glandular fever. Squeeze half a lemon in a cup of luke-warm water and add freshly sliced ginger pieces into it. Drink the mixture.
  • Salt with warm water – Salt water acts as a natural dehydrator. It removes the excess water from surrounding tissues and kills bacteria. It provides a quick relief from glandular fever. Mix a teaspoon of salt in a cup of luke-warm water and gargle it.
