Constipation in Children – Prevention and Home Remedies for Constipation in Children

Constipation is the passage of hard stools. This can be quite painful and can be prevented by following simple methods.

Prevention of Constipation
Some of the ways to prevent constipation in children include:

  • High-Fiber foods: Give your child a high-fiber diet including fruits, vegetables, whole-grain cereals, beans and breads. Limit your child from eating processed foods and those that has little or no fiber like cheese and meat.

  • Water: Encourage tour child to have plenty of water and fresh fruits and vegetable juice.

  • Exercise: Regular exercise or any physical activity helps to stimulate the normal bowel function.

  • Toilet training programme: Set aside time after meals for your child to use the toilet and make it a habit for a child to use the toilet at the same time regularly. Encourage the child to sit on the toilet for five to ten minutes. This routine should be followed even during holidays and vacations.

  • Ignoring a Bowel movement: Teach your child not to ignore the urge to have a bowel movement as some children get so involved in a play or any activity that they neglect the urge to defecate.

  • Review medications: If your child is already on certain medications that can cause constipation,then ask your doctor about other options.

Natural Remedies for Constipation in Children
Some of the natural remedies include:

  • Prune juice: Boil water and add a handful of organic prunes. Soak them overnight and strain and give the child as it is very beneficial in treating constipation.

  • Apple juice: Give freshly squeezed apple juice to the child as it eases the passage of stool.

  • Lemon juice: Mix lemon juice with warm water and give this to a child two to three times a day.

  • Bale fruit: This fruit is the best laxative as it cleans and tones the intestines and gives relief.

  • Ginger: Tea made of ginger is a very good remedy for constipation.

  • Linseed’s: Give 1 teaspoon of powdered linseed’s to the child.

  • Liquorice: Make an infusion of liquorice sweetened with plenty of honey and give this to your child 2 to 3 times a day.

  • Relaxation strategies: To relieve anxiety, make your child to breathe slowly and deeply. This helps to relax the pelvic muscles.

  • Massage: For children above 5 years old, make an aromatherapy massage oil using marjoram, Rosemary, Black Pepper which can be combined, then 6 to 10 drops are added to 30 ml of Avocado oil. This mixture is taken and gentle massage is given to the child’s tummy in a clockwise direction.

  • Acupuncture: This Chinese medicine may help to promote more frequent bowel movements. In this therapy, needles are inserted into various parts of the body that results in the stimulation of the pelvic muscles.
