Amyloidosis – Treatment of Amyloidosis

Amyloidosis is a group of metabolic disorders where a protein called amyloid gets accumulated in the organs and tissues which results in the damage of these organs and can be fatal. Symptoms depend on the organs involved as it can frequently affects kidneys, heart, liver, nervous system, spleen and gastrointestinal tract. It occurs very rarely and treatment is available to help manage symptoms and limit the production of amyloid protein.

Though there is no cure for amylodosis, treatment may include the management of signs and symptoms and limit the production of amyloid protein. They include:

Treating primary amyloidosis
The primary amyloidosis treatment include:


  • A chemotherapy agent that is used to treat certain types of cancer may be used by the doctor.
  • Researchers are still investigating other types of chemotherapy agent for the treatment of amyloidosis.
  • You may experience side effects like nausea, vomiting extreme fatigue and hair loss.

Peripheral blood stem transplantation

  • In this procedure, the damaged and diseased marrow is replaced with collected immature blood cells.
  • All the patients are not treated with this procedure as it is a very risky one.
  • This procedure has severe risks, including death.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of this procedure with your doctor and then only go for this treatment.

Other interventions
Depending on the type of the amyloidosis the treatment differs. They include:

  • Secondary amyloidosis treatment: The primary goal is to treat the underlying cause like rheumatoid arthritis where the patient is put on anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Hereditary amylodosis treatment: In this case, the possible surgical intervention includes liver transplantation because amyloid a protein that causes this disorder is produced in the liver.
  • Treating complications: There are many complications that are caused by this disease like it affects the kidney or heart, then the doctor may advise you a low salt diet or prescribe anti-diuretics. If your organ is severely damaged by the deposition of this protein, then doctor may advise an organ transplant which could prolong your life because it may get collected in the new organ also.Don’t get panicked, when a doctor advises for a transplant.

  • Avoid strenuous activity.
  • Continue with your normal daily activities.
