Gallstones – Treatment, Prevention and Home Remedies for Gallstones
Gallstones are small, pebble like substances that develop in the gallbladder. They are formed when the stored digestive juices in the gallbladder hardens. Gallbladder is an internal organ present beneath the liver that stores the bile juices secreted by liver and carries it to small intestine. Gallstones block this normal flow of bile and pose serious problems. The treatment, prevention and home remedies for gallstones are discussed below.
Gallstones that do not cause any symptoms need not be treated. They may be detected when undergoing tests like CT scan or ultrasound for other disease conditions. Treatment is only needed if gallstones pose serious problems.
Treatments for gallstones include medications and surgical treatment.
Medications: Doctors prescribe medications that help to dissolve gallstones. These are taken orally and may take some months to years to dissolve the gallstones. Injecting gallstone medications into the gallbladder is a recent treatment technique. This may be more effective in dissolving the gallstones and the experiments are going on to determine whether this technique is safer.
Surgical treatment: Gallbladder is removed surgically so that the gallstones do not occur frequently. There are two surgical techniques that remove the gallbladder. They are cholecystectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Once the gallbladder is removed, digestive fluids flow directly into the small intestine from the liver. This does not affect the person’s ability to digest food. The only drawback is it causes diarrhea.
