Nociceptive Pain

Nociceptive is caused by activation of sensory receptor called nociceptor. Nociceptors would react to potentially harmful stimuli by sending signal to the brain and spinal cord. The process of sending the signals called as nociception which makes the perception of the pain.

Nociceptive pain itself can be divided into superficial somatic pain and deep pain. Deep pain is divided into visceral and deep somatic.

Superficial pain is caused by the stimulation of nociceptors in the superficial tissues or the skin.

As a part of deep pain, visceral pain comes from the internal organ and could be localized. However, it is not an easy task to locate the source of the pain since the sensation of the pain located far from the source of injury.

On the other side, deep somatic pain is caused by activation of nociceptors in bones, blood vessels, fasciae, ligaments, muscles and tendons.

Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain is divided into peripheral neuropathic pain and central pain.

Peripheral neuropathic pain comes from the peripheral nervous system which resides outside the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).

Central pain comes from the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). The name of central pain is given when an injury happens to the central nervous system.
