Fibromyalgia – Causes and Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a common condition that causes long term effects at some specific places in the body. It causes pain, stiffness and tenderness of joints, muscles and tendons. It is also characterized by depression, anxiety, fatigue, restless sleep, disturbances in bowel function. The condition is also seen in the patients suffering from other medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

The risk of fibromyalgia increases with age and is more likely to occur in women than men. It is common especially in middle-aged women. The condition is known to develop in about 2 % of population in United States.

Causes of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia involves a number of factors that work together. But there is no exact known cause that is proven till date. The following are the causes that have been found to be responsible for fibromyalgia.

  • Changes in weather conditions
  • Lack of sound sleep
  • Excessive physical exertion
  • Increased psychological stress
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Anemia
  • Adrenal exhaustion
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Food allergy (caused by fermented foods, wheat, dairy products)
  • Infections caused by fungus Candida albicans, or viruses like Epstein-Barr virus
  • Insomnia or sleeping sickness. Researches revealed that this is the central cause for the pain developed in fibromyalgia. Insomnia is due to low levels of serotonin.
  • Depression
  • Unfit muscles
  • Immunological problems

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Symptoms of fibromyalgia vary depending on the physical activity, stress and weather. The condition involves many signs and symptoms.

Intense pain and tender points

Pain generally arises from the muscles and spreads to other body parts. When pressure is applied to some specific areas in the body, an additional pain is developed called as tender points. These tender points specifically occur in the areas of:

  • Inner knees
  • Sides of hips
  • Upper hips
  • Outer elbows
  • Upper chest
  • Front side of neck
  • Top of shoulders
  • Between shoulder blades
  • Back of the head

The general signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia are:

  • Sleeping disturbances
  • Fatigue
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Stress disorder
  • Irritable bowel movements
  • Headache
  • Endometriosis
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Numbness in face, arms, legs and hands
  • Difficulty in concentration
  • Tenderness in the elbow, knees, shoulder, head and thigh areas
