Endometriosis – Treatment, Prevention and Home Remedies for Endometriosis

Endometrisis is a genetical condition in females where endometrial-like cells are formed in an area other than uterus. These cells are shed during the menstrual cycle and and the synptoms worsen. This is one of the main cause for pelvic pains. The treatment, preventive methods and some of the remedies for endometriosis are discussed below.

Endometriosis Treatment

Endometriosis is treated with medications or surgery. Depending on the signs and symptoms, doctors choose the type of treatment to be given.

Pain medications

Pain is the most common symptom in women with endometriosis. Hence pain relievers are given to ease the menstrual cramps. The pain killers include:

  • mild narcotics (codiene)
  • simple analgesics (paracetamol and aspirin)
  • compound analgesics (a combination of either paracetamol or aspirin)
  • narcotic analgesics (similar to morphine)
  • anti-iflammatory drugs that are non-steroidal (voltaren, nurofen, ponstan)

Hormone therapy

The rise and fall of hormonal levels during menstruation cause the implants to thicken, breakdown and bleed. The hormones when supplemented, are effective in maintaining the levels and reduce the pain of endometriosis. The different hormonal therapies used to treat endometriosis are:

  • Progestogens and progestins
  • The combined oral contraceptive pill
  • Danazol
  • Mirena
  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone(Gn-Rh) agonists and antagonists
  • Aromatase inhibitors

Hormonal therapies are not a permanent treatment for endometriosis. The symptoms would revert once the treatment is stopped.

Conservative surgery

Surgery is the most effective method of treating endometriosis. Laparoscopy is the procedure that the surgeons choose for surgical removal of endometriosis implants. The other surgical methods are vaporization and laser ablation. Laparotomy is also an other method that takes a longer recovery period. These methods use lasers and instruments that destroys tissues with heat.

In extreme cases, hysterectomy is necessary that includes removal of both the ovaries. This is effective of all surgical methods. Removing ovaries ensures that endometriosis will not return.

Prevention of Endometriosis

Since the exact causes of endometriosis are not known, there is no proven prevention method. There can be certain level of protection against the disease for women who become pregnant early in their menstrual cycle and have more than one child.

  • The early diagnosis and treatment of menstrual obstruction prevents the endometriosis development in future.
  • The disease condition may not develop if oral contraceptive pills are used for a long time.

Home Remedies for Endometriosis

  • If the pain persists, you can try the following measures at home to get relieved from the discomfort.
  • Take the prescribed dose as soon as the discomfort begins or a day before the menstrual cycle.
  • Take the medicine only when the pain is really bad.
  • Lie down and elevate your legs by placing a pillow under your knees. When lying on to your side, bring your knees up to your chest to relieve back pressure.
  • Using a heating pad, apply heat to the lower abdomen. Also take a warm water bath. This relieves pelvic pain as the heat improves the blood flow.
  • Regular exercising improves blood flow and reduces pain.
