Do you often find yourself putting off tasks? You start off well and almost finish the task that you have taken up, but half-way through it you are overcome by a strong urge to do something else. Sounds familiar? Well, this is known as procrastination. The word might be complicated, but this is the most common problem faced by a lot of people around the world. There are different reasons why people procrastinate. The most common ones being – improper time management, fear of failure, perceiving that the task is boring or the urge to be a perfectionist.

But what can be done to avoid procrastination? Is there a solution to it? Most of the people are aware of this problem and know exactly what it takes to overcome it. Yet, they fail. If you are looking for a cure for this problem, you might be in for a surprise. There is no specific cure for it. But, there are a few tips which might help you overcome this problem gradually. 1. Schedule Your Work
Set time-lines and plan your work accordingly. Initially, you might find it difficult to stick to the schedule. Don’t give up and remind yourself about your decision. Don’t be disheartened if you miss the time-lines. Just ensure that you don’t repeat it often. Don’t just schedule your work and leave it there. Ensure that you actually follow it.

2. Avoid Distractions
Try and avoid distractions of any sort. Chatting with your colleague, phone calls, listening to music, the urge to play a game or start off a new task are a few examples of distractions. Identify the things which cause distraction. After identifying them, the next step is to figure out a way to avoid those distractions. Come up with a plan and follow it.

3. Never Postpone Your Work
Always start off with your work on time. Never wait for a right time or the right mood to start your work. Idling away your time mostly causes you to shift your focus from the current task. Once you lose your focus, you would never want to get back to your actual task. Motivate yourself to start work on time and complete it without any distractions.

4. Don’t Set Your Goals Too High
Always set simple and achievable goals. Most people set high goals and sometimes fail to achieve them. This leads to anger, frustration and low self-esteem. Start gradually and accomplish tasks successfully. You can then raise the bar a bit higher and work harder to accomplish the task. Do not pressurize yourself. Plan in advance and plan right.

5. Reward Yourself
Once you complete your work successfully, reward yourself. You might feel very happy and pepped up on completing a task in time. Go ahead and reward yourself. You could take a small break and listen to music, play a game or read your favorite magazine. Do things that make you happy. Make a note of how you were able to avoid procrastination and put it into practice every time.
