Edward’s Syndrome – Treatment of Edward’s Syndrome

Although Edward’s syndrome has no permanent cure, it can be treated to a certain extent. The babies affected with Edward’s Syndrome suffer from so many symptoms. Hence, parents and doctors face difficult choices regarding the suitable treatment to give them. Surgical treatment is only effective to a certain degree to treat the abnormalities.

The treatment for this disease is associated with the type of symptoms the child faces.

  • Children suffering with this syndrome are generally less in weight. The weight loss is due to heart defects. Hence consulting a nutritionist helps
  • Child may face difficulty in swallowing food. In this he needs to be taken to a feeding specialist or to babies dysphagia clinic
  • Child facing difficulty in visualizing things and hearing can be aided with glasses and hearing aides
  • Serious discomfort arises in child suffering from gas in bowels. For this anti-medication is given for relief
  • Stool softener medication is helpful to reduce irritation in children
  • Occupational and physical therapy is helpful to increase the motor skill
  • The conditions like spina bifida, hydrocephalus are treated surgically

Medical treatment

Medical care need to be given to the individuals. This should focus on treating infections, treating heart defects and providing proper nutrition. During the early stages, the infants with this syndrome require a skilled medical care. Most infants face the difficulty in surviving to age of one year. This is due to the complex medical problems they undergo. In the future, the developing medical care may help the infants to survive beyond their childhood.

Prognosis for Edward’s Syndrome

Most children with Trisomy 18 die within one year. Average life span is less than two months for 50% of the children and 90–95% die within an year. The rest 5-10% children are severely mentally retarded. Verbal communication is very limited in them. Their ability to understand, learning is also limited. They can hardly recognize and interact with the other person.
