Somatic Pain

Somatic pain is experienced when the nerves located in the skin or tissues are injured or traumatized. These nerves are called nociceptors. They pick up sensations related to vibration, temperature and injury to the skin, joints or muscles. The somatic nervous system is responsible for all our voluntary movements like walking, running, jumping etc. Pain which prevents us from performing voluntary movements and that which affects the somatic nervous system is known as somatic pain.

Causes
Common causes of somatic pain include:

  • Injury to the bones or ligaments
  • Pressure on nerves
  • Post surgical pain
  • Muscle fatigue

Treatment
People suffering with somatic pain describe it as dull, aching, burning or pricking. Treatment for somatic pain includes:

  • Analgesics

  • Anticonvulsants
  • Physical therapy
  • Exercise
  • Psychological treatment
  • Cognitive therapy
