What is a neurotransmitter? – What neurotransmitter affects sleep?
Neurotransmitters are basically different types of chemical mesengers that brain contains. They act as communication agents between various brain cells. These are molecular substances which usually have an effect on your mood, sleep, heart rate, appetite, temperature, fear, aggression, anxiety and other physical and psychological occurrences.
There are three types of neurotransmitter in our brain. They are as follows:
Biogenic amine neurotransmitters
Biogenic amine neurotransmitters are the longest and the most efficient neurotransmitters when it comes to understanding psychological disturbances. There are six types of Biogenic amine neurotransmitters. They are:
Serotonin is a chemical messenger which modulate mood, sleep, appetite and anxiety.
Norepinephrine influences alertness and sleep
Epinephrine is a strss hormone but also consider as a neurotransmitter in the brain
Dopamine influences body movement, reward, addictive behaviour etc.
Histamine influences attention, arousal and learning.
Acetylcholine is associated with more of learning, muscle activation and memory.
Peptide neurotransmitters are more involved in with meditation, regulation of mood, stimulating appetite and other multiple functions.
Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a new discovery and has been associated with panic attacks and anxiety.
Amino acid neurotransmitters
Amino acid neurotransmitters are known as main players of neutrotransmission process. There are two types of amino acid neurotransmitters. They are:
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) acts with a negative feedback process. It blocks transmission signal from one cell to another one.
Glutamate is involved in learning and memory. It is one of the most abundant chemical messeengers in brain.
