The ear is one of the most important sensory organs in human body. It helps to hear the sound properly and makes it easy for the person to communicate accordingly.

What Is Ear Infection – Symptoms?

Ear infection is a common problem found in children under the age of 15. It might happen before they reach one year old and it might also happen before the age of three.

In US thirty-five percent of visits to the pediatricians are due to ear infections. The bacteria, virus etc might be the cause. Poking and picking the ear with sharp objects or Q-tips might enhance the problem. It is advisable to go to a doctor to get the right treatment. The doctor might suggest antiseptics, antibiotics, ear drops to alleviate the ear infection.

Types of Ear Infections

There are mainly three types of ear infections. They are:

  • Otitis externa or outer ear infection
  • Otis media or middle ear infection
  • Otis interna or inner ear infections

Otitis Externa: Swimmer’s ear is the common name for Otitis externa. It affects the outer ear and is found in people who swim. In this the outer ear might become red and inflamed and it pain severely when touched or pulled.

Otitis Media: The word ‘ot’ meaning ear and ‘itis’ meaning inflammation. It is a kind of inflammation or infection caused to the middle ear. The two types of otitis media are:
Acute Otitis media: The ear might get swelling and infection in acute otitis media.

Otitis media with effusion: There might be trapped mucus or fluid. It might affect the hearing of the person.

Otitis Interna: It is the infection which affects the inner ear. This infection might stay there for one or more days. It might not get noticed by the person who is suffering from that and it might cause vomiting and nausea.

The ear infections affect small children and children below the age of twenty.

The primary symptoms found in adults are:

  • Difficulty to sleep properly
  • Fever
  • Uncommon irritation
  • Pus or fluid drain
  • Difficulty to balance
  • Loss of hearing or partial deafness
  • Scratching the ear frequently

Ear Infections Symptoms in Adults
Ear infections are found very less in adults. They normally affect children.

The primary symptoms found in adults are:

  • Fever
  • Ear pain
  • Plugged sensation in the ear
  • Giddiness
  • Severe earache
  • Temporary loss of hearing
  • Swelling from the fluid, water or mucus trapped inside
