Kidney Stone Symptoms

Kidney stones are also called Renal calculi. A kidney stone is a mass of minerals and organic matter that may form in a kidney. It usually comprised of a compound called calcium oxalate which is the result of a build-up of dissolved minerals on the inner lining of the kidneys. It can be as small as grains of sand or as large as golf balls while maintaining a sharp crystalline structure. Kidney stones obstruct the urine flow at various points.

Here are few symptoms of kidney stones:

  • Kidney stones often cause no pain while they are in the kidneys, but they can cause sudden, severe pain as they travel from the kidneys to the bladder. The pain manifests in side, belly or groin area. The pain is described as colicky pain or the worst pain ever experienced.
  • Hemeturia, or blood in urine, is one of the significant symptoms that occurs due to damage to inside wall of kidney, ureters or urethra
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Pus in the urine or dark urine

Types of Kidney Stones:

There are four types of kidney stones. They are calcium, struvite, uric acid and cystine stones. When bones and muscles do not store calcium, it gets deposited in the kidney forming stones. When infection takes place in the urinary system, the mineral magnesium along with ammonia gets deposited in the kidney as struvite stones. When the urine contains too much of acid, stones of uric acid are formed. Cystine is one of the building blocks of muscles, nerves and other parts of the body. Though rare, deposits of this substance can also form stones in the kidney.
