Hypoglycemia Symptoms

Hypo means ‘low,’ glycemia refers to the level of glucose in the blood. Hypoglycemia is the condition in which there is abnormally low level of glucose in the blood.

The Physiology: The food that we take is broken down into simple sugars by the process of digestion. This sugar enters the blood stream as glucose which increases the glucose level in the blood. The pancreas secretes a hormone known as insulin into the blood which binds the glucose and takes in to the interiors of tissues and cells for production of energy and sustenance of the cells. This lowers the glucose levels in the blood.

Normal glucose levels fall between 70 and 150 mg. The condition above 150 mg is called hyperglycemia. The condition below 70 is called hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia is caused when there is no pumping of glucose in the blood, ie, no intake of food. It is also caused when there is high amount insulin in the blood that abnormally lowers the glucose level in the blood.

Here are few symptoms of hypoglycemia:

  • Extreme hunger
  • Fatigue
  • Shakiness or trembling
  • Mental confusion
  • Nervousness
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Sleepiness
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Heart palpitations
  • Craving for sweets
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Forgetfulness
  • Fainting
  • Blurred vision
  • Outbursts of temper

  • Nervousness
  • Tachycardia
  • Palpitations
  • Warm feeling
  • Sweating
  • Clamminess
  • Coldness
  • Pallor
  • Feeling of numbness
  • Dilated pupils

Glucagon Hypoglycemia Symptoms:

  • Hunger

Hypoglycemia Symptoms in Babies:

  • Irritability
  • Cyanosis
  • Jitters
  • Respiratory distress
  • Myoclonic jerks
  • Sweating
  • Apneic episodes
  • Hypothermia
  • Hypotonia
  • Somnolence
  • Seizures
  • Refusal to feed
  • The symptoms of low blood sugar may be similar to conditions like heart failure, asphyxia, hypocalcemia or sepsis.

Hypoglycemia Symptoms During Sleep:

  • Crying out
  • Having nightmares
  • Finding sheets or pajamas damp from perspiration
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion on waking up
  • Irritability

Hypoglycemia Symptoms During Pregnancy: The risk is high for the mother in the first trimester. However, there is no threat to the baby if the mother has low blood sugar levels.

  • Dizziness
  • Shaking
  • Light-headedness
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Sweating
  • Changes in vision
  • Reactive Hypoglycemia Symptoms: It is special type of low blood sugar level disease. The signs become apparent 2-3 hours after having food. It happens because the pancreas continuous to produce insulin even after the period of digestion is over. Excess insulin in the body reduces the glucose levels below normalcy producing this condition. Some signs of this hypoglycemia are:

    • Hunger
    • Shakiness
    • Sweating
    • Light-headedness
    • Dizziness
    • Confusion
    • Sleepiness
    • Difficulty in speaking
    • Weakness
    • Anxiety

    Complications of Hypoglycemia:

    • Cortisol levels raised in the serum of blood
    • Coma
    • Hyperhidrosis
    • Visual Impairment
    • Tremor
    • Acute confusional state
    • Fits
    • Headache
    • Weakness in muscle
    • QT lengthening
    • Cardiac arrest
    • Reduced level of consciousness
    • Sinus tachycardia
    • Vegetative state
    • T waves flat
