Gastric Cancer Symptoms

Gastric cancer is also called as stomach cancer. The stomach is part of the digestive system. It is located in the upper abdomen, between the esophagus and the small intestine. Stomach cancer is a terrible condition where the tissues of stomach turn malignant or cancerous.

Stomach cancer is often asymptomatic or causes only nonspecific symptoms in its early stages. By the time symptoms occur, the cancer has generally metastasized to the esophagus or the small intestine, and can extend through the stomach wall to nearby lymph nodes and organs like liver, pancreas, and colon.

  • Nearly 800,000 deaths happen all over the worldwide per year because of this type of cancer.
  • A major cause for this very high number is that the symptoms are latent in the initial stages and become apparent only when the disease is in its advanced stages.
  • According to the national cancer institute, last year (2009) there were 21,130 number of estimated new cases from stomach cancer in the United States.
  • It took the life of 10,620 individuals by the end of the year.
