Food Poisoning Symptoms

Food poisoning is an acute syndrome that occurs due to ingestion of contaminated food. When one eats the food that contains pathogenic bacteria, viruses and toxins produced by bacteria it becomes poisonous and stomach could not digest it.

Some the types of bacteria causing food poisoning are Bacteria- E-coli, Shigella, Salmonella, etc. Viruses include Rota virus, Calci virus, Norwalk virus, Adeno virus and others. Parasites like Giardia lamblia, Balantidium coli, Entameoba histolytica also cause food poisoning.

Symptoms of food poisoning depend on the type of contaminant and the amount eaten. They can range from upset stomach, diarrhoea, fever, vomiting, abdominal cramps and dehydration, to more severe illness such as paralysis and meningitis. Here are few symptoms of food poisoning:

  • Upset stomach, Abdominal pain, Abdominal cramps
  • Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhoea
  • Watery and bloody diarrhoea
  • Pus or mucus in the stool
  • Fever that lasts longer than 24 hours
  • Dizziness, fainting, rapid heart rate
  • Weakness, numbness or tingling in the arms, legs or mouth
  • Dehydration symptoms like excessive thirst, dry mouth, little urination and dizziness

Depending on the contaminant, other serious symptoms such as chills and fever, bloody stools, and nervous system damage may follow and can lead to death.

Mild food poisoning symptoms clear up in a few days on their own. In the case of continued illness one should seek medical advice. Children, elders, pregnant women should consult the physician as soon as they feel the symptoms.
