Colitis Symptoms

Colitis is inflammation in the large intestine or colon. Based on the cause of inflammation, there are different types of colitis: Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s colitis, Diversion colitis, Ischemic colitis, Infectious colitis, Fulminant colitis, Chemical colitis, Microscopic colitis and Atypical colitis.

Symptoms of colitis depend upon the type of colitis. Here we give generalized symptoms of any type of colitis.

Colitis usually begins in the lower part of the colon and spreads upwards. The first and foremost symptom of colitis is Tenesmus. Tenesmus is increased and constant urgency to move the bowel.

Some of the gastrointestinal symptoms of colitis include:

  • Cramping pains in the abdomen
  • Mucus in the stool
  • Blood in the stool
  • Diarrhoea may present itself, although some forms of colitis there can be constipation as well
  • Intense pain and tenderness in the abdomen

Other symptoms of associated conditions of colitis include:

  • Rapid weight loss
  • Aches and pains within the joints
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Fever and chills
  • Depression

Other symptoms may include:

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn and Cramps

Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms:

  • Persistent or recurrent diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever

Crohn’s Colitis Symptoms:

  • Weight loss
  • Poor appetite
  • Night sweats
  • Rectal pain
  • Rectal bleeding

Signs of Diversion Colitis:

According to the Merck Manual’s Online Medical Library, nearly one-third of patients who retain a portion of the large intestine, after a surgery called an ileostomy or colostomy, develop diversion colitis symptoms. Discharge of mucus and blood from the rectum and frequent abdominal pains are some other symptoms of diversion colitis.

Signs of Ischemic Colitis:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Passage of bloody stools
  • Tender belly
  • Decrease in bowel motility
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Confusion
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dehydration
  • Fever higher than 38 degree celsius
  • Lower digestive bleeding

Signs of Infectious Colitis:

  • Weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Discomfort
  • Diarrhea

Signs of Fulminant Colitis:

  • Potential for the colon to burst
  • Dehydration
  • Severe abdominal bloating

Signs of Chemical Colitis:

  • Intermittent abdominal pain
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Hematochezia
  • Severe Diarrhea

Signs of Microscopic Colitis:

  • Chronic watery diarrhea
  • Bloody stools
  • Abdominal cramps and pain

Signs of Atypical Colitis:

If the disease shows symptoms which are different from the signs mentioned above, doctors classify it under atypical colitis.

Colitis Symptoms Diet: This inflammatory disease compels the patient to follow a very strict diet. The attack can be very severe to face. It is important that a note is kept of all the foods taken. Foods to avoid are spicy and fried food, popcorn, wheat, nuts, sugar, dairy and acidic fruits. Fruits like apples, papaya, pears, bananas and dairy products like buttermilk, yoghurt and mild cheeses are beneficial.
